My head is pounding uncontrollably. How did I do this all the time when I was in my early twenties? The music is blaring so loudly that my own inner thoughts can’t even hear themselves. Maybe I should enjoy that.

“Don’t look like this is torture!” Emma shouts as she shakes her booty to the hip-hop song.

It’s been a few days since I spoke to James and instead of being a big baby moping around my apartment, Emma convinced me to get back into civilization. That’s how I ended up here.

Toxic is a popular nightclub and the line is always a mile long to get inside. Of course Emma knows everyone and got us instantly escorted in. The space is large, but they don’t over pack it to give it a feel of superiority. Purple neon lights strobe around the dance floor area and the walls are lined with black VIP booths.

Women dressed in tight black corsets with fishnet stockings and thigh-high leather stilettos serve drinks. Both men and women flip on ropes dangling from the ceiling as aerial acrobatics. This place screams sex and money. Not usually my style but Emma didn’t go for my idea of hitting up the library or the gym. I’d rather be swimming right now.

How she talked me into coming out tonight is beyond me. And she managed to snag two men to double date—Daniel and Grant. They work out at her gym and apparently she has a thing for Grant, which means I need to get along with Daniel tonight.

The guys join us from the bar with drinks. Daniel hands me one and I nearly spill it all over the place in shock—on the clear plastic cup is a yellow symbol of a bee. That’s when I notice they are on all the cups.

“Everything okay?” Daniel asks.

“Yes, thank you,” I say, regaining my composure.

Ignore the bees.

Daniel stands extremely close to me. “Have you been here before?” he shouts into my ear as he pulls me into his side snugly.

“First-timer.” My eyes dart around the room and I spot the giant bees on the back of the leather VIP booths. They are rhinestoned in gold.

What’s with the bees? Does Toxic have some kind of mascot? I surely don’t need any more reminders of the guy I haven’t spoken to in days.

“Let’s go dance!” Emma shouts, waving her hands in the air.

Dancing is just what I need to get these bees out of my mind. For a few songs, I enjoy myself. Shaking my hips to the music, I heat up as all of our sweaty bodies grind together. When I can’t take all this body heat, I excuse myself. Daniel follows behind me.

As we wait for our waters, Daniel towers over me with a wide smile.

“You’re very beautiful,” he slurs the words right in my face. I doubt he can see me as his eyes are half closed.

“Thanks,” I groan.

Daniel pushes my hair behind my shoulder and rubs my cheek. I move my head back and nearly knock into the person standing behind me.
